WORSHIP AND SERMONS FOR LENT, 2012
Faith Presbyterian Church
Lent is a forty-day period before Easter (we do not count the Sundays because Sundays commemorate the Resurrection event). It begins on Ash Wednesday, February 22, and ends on April 8. Lent is a season of soul-searching and repentance. It is a season for reflection and taking stock. Lent is often seen as a journey … as a traveling “on the way” through our spiritual lives as we seek to deepen our relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
In the earliest days of the Church, Lent was a time of re-dedication in preparation for Easter. For the new believer and the convert to the Christian faith, Lent was a time of instruction in the faith in preparation for baptism. By observing the forty days of Lent, the individual Christian imitates Jesus’ withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days.
This year our theme for these Sundays will be Abide with Me as we too have our time of preparation as we travel. Hymn #543 has gained tradition of being an evening song, but was written by Henry Francis Lyte in 1947 on his last Sunday in the pulpit. Following a walk in the garden and a lovely sunset, the preacher compose words that reflect our journey of faith, especially during the Season of Lent.
