A Summer Education Opportunity
During June, July and August, Pastor Dave Van Arsdale will be leading a discussion of recent books on Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m. The group will be meeting in the Iona Room, with cool comfort and an Informal setting. These are interesting books that are not best sellers. They will help us examine how and where our faith matters in this modern world.
Come, enjoy some fun conversation and get into several interesting books.
Tuesdays, June 1 and 8 at 10:00 a.m.
Rediscovering Values, On Wall Street, Main Street, and Your Street, by Jim Wallis.
When we start with the wrong question, no matter how good an answer we get, it won’t give us the results we want. Rather than joining the throngs who are asking, When will this economic crisis be over? Jim Wallis says the right question to ask is How will this crisis change us? Wallis contends that we need a new normal, and this economic crisis is an invitation to discover what that means. Some of the principles Wallis unpacks for our new normal are . . .
Tuesdays, July 6 and 13 at 10:00 a.m.
Have a Little Faith, by Mitch Albom.
The author of Tuesdays with Morrie
has done it again and has a wonderful story revealing universal truths concerning tough questions about life and death. Albom’s latest book follows an unusual request from Mitch’s hometown Rabbi, “Would you deliver my eulogy.” Albom
becomes involved with a Detroit Pastor – a reformed drug dealer and convict – who preaches to the poor and homeless in a decaying church with a hole in its roof. Moving between their worlds, Christian and Jewish, African-American and white, impoverished and well-to-do, Mitch observes how these very
different men employ faith similarly in fighting for survival: the older, suburban Rabbi, embracing it as death approaches; the younger, inner-city Pastor relying on it to keep himself and his church afloat.

OSCAR NIGHTS AT FAITH
2nd Thursday of the month
Movie - 4:00 p.m.
Dinner - 6:00 p.m. - $6
That’s right! The Christian Education Committee has selected four movies for your summer entertainment. Each of these movies was honored in some way at the 82nd Academy Awards ceremony. The movies are distinctly different from each other. We think you will enjoy each one.
June 10th…“The Blind Side”
“The Blind Side” was something of a sleeper. It opened small but grew big as people spread the word, “Go see it! You’ll love it!” Sandra Bullock won “Best Actress” for her role as Anne Tuohy, a thoroughly white, upper class Southern woman, who, seeing a homeless black boy alone on the street, takes him home with her. And therein begins a story of family, discovery and love. Anne’s own friends think she has done something weird. But her husband and two other children are just as open, welcoming and supportive as she is. You will be cheering as you watch Michael Oher grow from a bumbling, poorly educated boy into an All-American college football player and first round NFL draft pick. The Tuohy family are his biggest fans. This is based on a true story. Michael Oher now plays offensive tackle for the Baltimore Ravens. Opening night for this film is June 10.
July 8th…“Julie and Julia”
“Julie and Julia” is the story of Julie Powell (Amy Adams), a low-level and bored employee of an insurance company. As a way of changing her life, she decides to cook her way through “Mastering the Art of French Cooking”, every recipe in the book in a year and blog about her experience. Side by side with this story, is the story of Julia Child (Meryl Streep) in France with her diplomat husband, Paul (Stanley Tucci). She, too, is looking for something to do.

Prayer and Share
On Tuesdays, at 9:15 a.m. we will gather again to begin our "prayer and share time". This is a time to bring your joys and concerns, personal and private, global and public to the Lord.
There may be meditations, readings from Scripture, selections of poetry or hymnody, perhaps communion by intinction, or a time of silent prayer and meditation. It can be anything that those present need it to be. We will conclude in time for a break before the 10 a.m. Bible Study. All are welcome! Hope to see you there.

Recycling Reminders
The Going Green committee reminds you that we have recycling bins in the far corner of the church parking lot. The Lions Club has provided two bins for recycling newspapers, magazines, junk mail, and used computer paper. The Lions Club also has a bin for aluminum cans. Please make use of these convenient recycle bins and tell your friends and neighbors that they are available.
The Lions Club has recently added bins to recycle plastic containers with a #1 or #2 on the bottom in two locations in Sun City. One is behind the Safeway Store at 107th and Bell Road. The other is at the corner of 107th Ave. and Peoria Avenue.
Unfortunately we will no longer collect plastic grocery and other bags. Walmart has discontinued the grocery bag recycling fundraiser for schools; therefore no more bags will be needed. Remember to carry your cloth bags to the grocery store to prevent even more plastic bags from ending up in the land fills.
