Education at Faith Church

A Summer Education Opportunity

During June, July, and August Pastor Dave Van Arsdale will be leading a discussion, of recent books, on the first and second Tuesdays. The group will be meeting in Iona Room, with cool comfort and an informal setting. One book is fun, one is seriously challenging, and one is a fascinating story about living a faithful life. Come, enjoy some fun conversation and get into several interesting books.

Tuesdays, June 3 and 10 at 10:00 a.m.
Whitebread Protestants, Food and Religion in American Culture
By Daniel Sack,
From Communion services to potluck suppers, food becomes the language of deep faith convictions, revealing complex and shifting understandings of ''ritual, community, hospitality, and justice.' Mr. Sack has chosen to focus on ''mainline Protestantism.'' He devotes a chapter to the Lord's Supper and the proper way to celebrate it. Other chapters focus on building community through church banquets and other food-centered socializing; on soup kitchens; on the ''hunger politics'' of overseas relief and domestic food programs.

Tuesdays, July 1 and 8 at 10:00 a.m.
The Culture of Fear, Why Americans Are Afraid
of the Wrong Things

By Barry Glassner
Following the defining moments of 1999 are those of the Columbine massacre. Glassner evaluates life in America. The author contends that the United States is safer and more affluent than ever. Yet our nightmares, embodied by trench-coated outsiders, have overtaken our dreams. We wring our hands and ask: What can we learn from these horrific acts? What can be done about this epidemic of violence?

Tuesdays, August 5 and 12 at 10:00 a.m.
The Year of Living Biblically, One Man’s Humble Quest
to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible
By A. J. Jacobs
Jacobs grew up in a very secular home Jewish family (as he says, “Jewish in the same way the Olive Garden is an Italian restaurant.”). He decided to dive in headfirst and to experience the Bible himself and find out what’s good in it, and what’s maybe not so relevant to the 21st century. The resulting year was fascinating, entertaining and informative.

We invite you to participate in the many educational and spiritual growth opportunities at Faith Church.

Library ... Let's Talk Books

Wednesday, April 30,
at 1:30p.m.

by Miriam Bedwell in the Calvin Library
These is My Words: The Diary of Sarah Agnes Prine, 1881-1901 by Nancy E. Turner has been selected for One Book Arizona.  Everyone in Arizona is encouraged to read and discuss this book.  One reviewer writes, “This rip-roaring yarn is based on Turner's great-grandmother's diary and covers 20 years in the life of a woman in the Arizona Territories at the end of the last century. Through these pages, we watch the spirited Sarah, unpolished but spunky at 17, improve both her grammar and her grace; come to terms with death and tragedy including Indian attacks, train robbers, and childhood disease; marry twice and love one man fiercely; birth and bury children; and keep a large cast of extended family in her heart and in her kitchen. Along the way, she examines her own feelings toward Indians, Mexicans and folks from back east; and attracts the love of her life by besting a bully in a shooting match.” All are welcome to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea as we listen to Miriam review remarkable book.  A copy of this book is available in Calvin Library.

Sister Joan D. Chittister is a Benedictine nun and an international lecturer on topics concerning women, the poor, peace and justice, and contemporary issues in Church and Society.  She has authored 35 books, Several of them can be found in Calvin library.  Her writing is insightful, creative and provocative.

Welcome to the Wisdom of the World and its Meaning for You: Universal Spiritual Insights Distilled from Religious Traditions. (291/Chi) This is her most recent book. Drawing on the stories and insights of Hinduism, Buddhism, Judasism, Christianity, and Islam, Chittister explores life’s most pressing questions.

The Tent of Abraham: Stories of Hope and Peace for Jews, Christians and Muslims (222.1) This book is coauthored with Rabbi Waskow and Sufi writer Chishti.  Of all the books focusing on the Palestinian/Israeli conflict it has been said that none has appealed to individual minds and hearts quite like this one.

Called to Question:  A Spiritual Memoir (248/Chi).  There came a point in her life when usual answers to big questions didn’t speak to her any more.  She began to ask questions no one wanted to ask. Her journal is the basis of this book and focuses on seeking answers to life issues that haunt us daily, but which few take time to consider.

SEE YOU IN THE LIBRARY!
